Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services Limited, Glasgow

Did you take pension transfer advice from Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services?

If you took pension transfer advice from Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services based in Glasgow or either of their appointed representative firms (Cliffton Gillis and Tidal Wealth Management) then there is a substantial chance you may have been mis-advised and be due compensation.

The firm, which already had a number of previous Financial Ombudsman (FOS) decisions against its advice to pension holders to leave highly valuable final salary workplace pensions and to also invest in unregulated pension investments such as carbon credits, has now been declared as being in FSCS default following its collapse into liquidation. It’s believed the FSCS are currently reviewing an astonishing 34 claims against advice given by the firm.

The directors of Cowley & Miller were Judith Cowley and James Miller, previously both worked with One Wealth Management Ltd, yet another Glasgow based advice firm that collapsed into liquidation following a number of FOS decisions against the advice it gave and is also classed as being in FSCS default.

The collapse of Cowley & Miller is hardly a surprise given the UK’s financial regulator stripped them of their defined benefit workplace pension permissions back as far as April 2018, this was then followed by an asset restriction order in June 2021. It’s also believed that the firm failed to pay compensation against any of the upheld FOS decisions against it which stretch back as far as 2018.

Finally, a word of warning, following the recent collapse of the Independent Benefit Consultancy, yet another failed Glasgow based IFA firm, a huge number of their former clients have been illegally cold-called by Simon Adams solicitors based in Manchester. Former customers of Cowley & Miller, Cliffton Gillis and Tidal Wealth Management should be equally carefully not to fall victim of Simon Adams’ high pressure tactics and enormous fees.
